Donald Trump vs. O’Reilly On Birthright Citizenship





 TRUMP: "We’ve spent last year $113 billion on illegal immigrants.
We have to do something about it."

Mr. Trump’s immigration reform plan addresses the issue of hundreds of thousands of children being born on U.S. soil to illegal immigrants each year:

“End birthright citizenship. This remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration. By a 2:1 margin, voters say it’s the wrong policy, including Harry Reid who said ‘no sane country’ would give automatic citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants.”

CLIP:

REID: "No sane country would do that, right? Guess again."

Bill O’Reilly asserted Trump’s proposal has no chance of becoming reality.

CLIP:

O'REILLY: “But then you say, ‘well we gotta have mass deportations.’ That’s not gonna happen because the 14th Amendment says if you’re born here, you’re an American and you can’t kick Americans out.”
TRUMP: "I don’t think they have American citizenship and if you speak to some very, very good lawyers — and I know some will disagree — but many of them agree with me, you’re going to find they do not have American citizenship."

In 1868, a definition of citizenship entered the Constitution with the ratification of the Fourteenth Amendment:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

O’Reilly asked Trump if he would support a constitutional amendment to put an end to birthright citizenship.

CLIP:

TRUMP: "It’s a long process and I think it would take too long.
I’d much rather find out whether or not anchor babies are actually citizens. Because a lot of people don’t think they are."
O’REILLY: "All right. You can test… Why don’t you test it now? Why don’t you have your guys file a Federal suit now?"
TRUMP: "We’re going to test it now."
O’REILLY: "You should do it tomorrow."
TRUMP: "We’re going to test it out. That’s going to happen, Bill."
